In the same year that brought us one of the greatest inspirational fighting films of all time ( WARRIOR' we also get this: the robot variation on 'ROCKY. Actually it's more like another Sylvester Stallone classic though, OVER THE TOP' due to the fact that it's about a father spending the summer with his eleven year old son, he just met for the first time, while trying to make money in underground fighting, robot fighting that is (rather than arm wrestling. Hugh Jackman stars as the father and Dakota Goya (who played young 'Thor' in 'THOR' co-stars as his son. The lovely Evangeline Lilly (looking as adorable as ever) also co-stars as Jackman's ex. The film was written by John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven and directed by Shawn Levy (who's directed a slew of family films including two 'NIGHT OF THE MUSEUM's, DATE NIGHT' and the 'CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN' and 'PINK PANTHER' remakes. The movie is pretty cheesy kids fair but it is well made cheese and enjoyable if you like fight movies and robots.
The film is based on the 1956 short story 'Steel' by Richard Matheson and tells the tale of a world (set in 2020) where robots have replaced humans in boxing. Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, an ex-boxer who now enters has-been robots in illegal underground fights to make money. His robots are constantly getting ripped apart though as he falls deeper and deeper into debt. While eluding some thugs he owes money to he finds out his ex-girlfriend has passed away and left their son, Max, to him. After finding out that the boy's rich aunt and uncle (Hope Davis and James Rebhorn) desperately want custody of him Charlie sees an opportunity to make some big cash. He makes a deal with Max's Uncle that he'll take the boy while he and his wife are vacationing for their second honeymoon and then hand him over to them with full custody in exchange for 100,000. Max is not happy to hear his father 'sold' him but once he gets caught up in his dad's obsession with robot boxing the two begin to bond. Especially when Max finds an old abandoned sparring robot named Atom that the two turn into a cherished underdog champ.
The movie is pretty bad at times. It's the type of film that will probably be remembered as a corny moneymaker years from now that was never actually very good (like a lot of 80's films. I think being too critical of films like this is a bad thing though; it dampens the creative spirit and youthful imagination. Sure this film is full of clichés and recycled scenes from dozens of other films and can be predicted every step of the way (but not quite; the end has a few surprises) but it's still entertaining. I did also have a problem believing that robot boxing could ever be as popular as the real thing, there's a lot more at stake with real people involving real emotions and real blood shed, but it is just a movie. Of course it fails in comparisons to the great fighting movies like 'ROCKY. WARRIOR. FIGHTING. LIONHEART' and 'ROCKY II, III, IV and VI' it also pales in comparison to 'OVER THE TOP' of course, as well) but it is a decent genre buddy to movies like 'TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. Definitely not a classic or even a very good film by any manner but it is fun and well made for what it is. Movies like this empower the kid in all of us.
